Abstract This study focuses on the effect of role – play activities to facilitate the learning of English as a foreign language henceforth (EFL) .Students need to develop and express themselves in real conversation , students of English department are need to participate actively in the process of learning EFL , they practice the target language in contexts similar to real life situations where stress and shyness are removed. This study aims to encourage the students and motivate them to learn the target language effectively. Developing students’ communicative oral skill is one of the most important goals teaching EFL. In this experiment ,the researcher adapted the null hypothesis that there is no significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group in the pre-post test .this study is limited to the third level students in the College of Education for Women in the academic year 209-2010,also it is limited at using the role playing activity in teaching dialogue. The students are asked to perform a dialogue characters on topics chosen from “New Interchange” by Jack C.Richardes (2009) Book. ,they had been trained to speak using role – play activities. The number of the subject was (30).The pre-test was conducted on the 18th of Oct.2009.the same students take the same procedures on the post-test it was taken place on 22nd of Dec. 2009 ,the result of data obtained from these two tests are explained in (4.4.1). After the end of the experiment a short survey was distributed to all 30 students of the experimental group the result of their response are shown in( 4.4.2).The findings of this study suggested some implication for the teaching of speaking to Iraqi college students that speaking is an essential skill in TEFL at the English Department . It is important to teach listening and speaking during the first four semester .It is important to assign two hours each week for such class. the conclusion of this study refers to that the experimental group showed great gains in their oral skill .This paper proved the effectiveness of using role-play activity in teaching English as a foreign language . The researcher suggest that it is important to replicate this study with larger number of students in order to give more precise result.
